Youth Program

What is the YALL program?

YALL stands for Youth, Agriculture, Livestock and Leadership. It is a New Roots program at the International Rescue Committee focused on supporting and educating refugee and new American youth on topics related to food justice, agriculture, leadership, and more!

We have made some changes to the program and now are offering two types of positions:

1. YALL Youth – Applications due by March 8, 2024.

2. YALL Peer Leader – Applications due by February 29, 2024.

Activities and Workshops

  • Learn how to garden and grow food at Redwood Farm

  • Be a youth leader at the Sunnyvale Farmers Market

  • Gain leadership and job readiness skills

  • Volunteer and get involved with the community

  • Food justice workshops

  • Cooking classes

  • Field trips (exploring the outdoors, visiting farms, community events, etc.)

  • Peer mentorship, team building & peer education

  • Fun and games!

  • Opportunities to learn about livestock and goat rearing with the 4-H Refugee Goat Club

Who

YALL Youth - For refugee and new American youth in grades 8-12, or recently graduated from high school.

YALL Peer Leaders - his position is for folks 18 years or older. Lead activities for the YALL youth, including mentoring youth, teaching youth how to grow food at Redwood Farm, selling at New Roots markets, and more. Refugee background or experience working with refugees preferred. Learn more about the position here.

When

Program runs April through October. Schedule is subject to change:

Spring:

  • April 6 - May 25

  • Saturdays, 9am-1pm

  • Breaks: May 4, June 1, June 8

Summer:

  • June 12 to August 17

  • Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays

  • Farm Crew: Wednesdays: 8am-12pm - Thursdays: 3:30-7:30pm - Fridays: 9-1pm - Saturdays: 8am-12pm

  • Markets Crew: Wednesdays: 3:30-7:30pm - Thursdays: 8am-12pm - Fridays: 9am-1pm - Saturdays: 9am-1pm

  • Breaks: July 17-20.

Fall:

  • September 7 to October 12

  • Saturdays: 9am–1pm

Youth are encouraged to find their own transportation, but UTA bus passes may be provided if it is a barrier to participation.

Stipend

Youth are paid a $450 stipend for attending the Spring, Summer, and Fall sessions, with an extra $50 bonus for excellent attendance!
