New Roots CSA

Weekly Farm Box

New Roots SLC offers a weekly farm box, providing market exposure and supplemental income for refugee farmers through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). CSA’s are a business model that allows consumers and producers to share the risks and rewards associated with food production. CSA members make a monetary commitment to the farmer at the beginning of the season and receive local, organically grown produce throughout the growing months in return.

Pre-Packed Shares

6 New Roots Farm businesses will be offering their own CSAs at 3 different locations in SLC valley.

In seasons past, New Roots has aggregated produce from multiple farmers to provide pre-packed vegetable bags for CSA members. We are adjusting our farm incubator model to better support farmer independence. In pursuit of that goal, each farmer will have their own CSA with technical assistance by New Roots staff. Free Choice Model at Redwood Farm

Free Choice CSA members still pay ahead of time for a set number of weeks of produce, but they will get to choose what goes into their vegetable bags that week at the time of pick-up. This is a great option for folks who want more control over the types and quantities of different vegetables they receive.

Upon arrival at their pick-up location, free choice CSA members will receive tokens from New Roots staff equal in value to their prepaid share. Members then use these tokens to shop for produce from multiple New Roots vendors on-site, including our youth farmers. Please note that free choice CSA membership is only available at our Redwood Farm pick-up location.

The pick-up day and time for the Redwood CSA options is on Wednesdays 4:30-7:00 pm. Individual farmer CSA’s have their own pick-up days and times, more information on those can be found on the links above.

How do I sign up for the CSA?

All CSA memberships are available for purchase on our CSA Online Store.

Please note that our individual farmer CSA options are part of our farmer training program. 2024 was the first year we offered this as a business development option for participating farmers, so we expect lessons to be learned and mistakes to be made along the way! If you decide an individual farmer CSA membership works best for you, we ask that customers supporting this exciting new program enter the season with patience and flexibility top of mind. This is the first time some of these businesses are operating under this model.

We are working with the “individual” farm businesses to create membership agreements that outline cancellation, refund and missed pick-up policies. Customers who purchase memberships with any of these farmers will be contacted later in the spring with more information and will be able to cancel their membership at that time if needed.

What Do We Grow?

What We Grow.jpg

We grow multiple varieties of the following crops: salad mix, heirloom tomatoes, kale, carrots, beets, radishes, turnips, arugula, mizuna, spinach, cherry tomatoes, green beans, tomatillos, bell peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, eggplant, potatoes, pumpkins, herbs, zucchini, summer squash and more!

Expand Your Palate

Occasionally, we include crops commonly grown in the home countries of New Roots farmers, such as African eggplant, amaranth, mustard greens, Thai pumpkins and more.

These crops are favorite staples enjoyed by our farmers. We include recipes from their families in our CSA newsletter, so you can make the most of these new veggies!

Flowers

One of the New Roots farmers, Bashire, is growing flowers this season! He will focus on fun-to-grow, high quality, drought and heat tolerant, cut flower varieties that produce well in our desert climate without using too much water. His flowers are harvested and arranged on market days: guaranteeing the longest vase life possible.

If you are interested in signing up for a flower share, please visit Bashire’s CSA page.
