Redwood Farm Improvement Project
New Roots in Salt Lake City is seeking community support to expand operations of New Roots community-based food access programming by completing the expansion of our Redwood Farm.
In March and April 2025, our team successfully expanded Redwood Farm from 2.5 acres to a total of 5 acres! This included putting in a new drip irrigation system, tilling the soil, shaping beds, and adding compost. Farmers successfully grew on 2 of the additional 2.5 acres in 2025 and the New Roots team plans to place farmers on the final 0.5 acres in 2026.
While that new land was under production in 2025, there are still some additional infrastructure items needed to ensure farmers can be successful. The New Roots team is currently raising funds to purchase a 20ft shipping container to build into on site farmer lockers. Since most farmers at the Redwood Farm site do not have cars and use public transportation, having a place for them to store supplies, farm shoes, and tools is essential to their success. The farm currently has one farmer locker that has been in place for many years, but Redwood Farm currently has more farmers than locker space available. Additionally New Roots is also raising funds to create a shaded seating area on the new side of the farm for farmers to rest and gather.
Your financial contribution will go along way in helping New Roots ensure that each farmer has the resources needed to be successful.
Our initial goal is to raise $5,000 by the end of December 2025.
Please help New Roots in Salt Lake City reach our goal by making a donation today.
Additional Background Information:
The Redwood Farm is a project of New Roots in Salt Lake City and is located at 3005 South Lester St. in West Valley City. The Redwood Farm is a diverse, organic vegetable farm.
Many refugees and new American clients of New Roots in SLC have agrarian backgrounds they’d like to apply in their new communities, but lack land and resources. New Roots removes these barriers by providing refugees and new Americans access to land, seeds, water, and tools. The program not only provides refugees and new Americans with gardening resources, but also a way to celebrate their heritage, apply their knowledge and skills, and nourish themselves and their families on many levels.
The farm provides an opportunity to not only grow enough food for their families, but also to sell their additional yield as primary or supplemental income. The farm program provides a substantial amount of income to some of the farmers who are growing on a larger scale. The Farm also connects participants to a community of other refugee and new American farmers, providing a meaningful sense of belonging.
New Roots in SLC operates two New Roots Farmers Markets at Redwood Farm on Wednesdays from 4:30pm-7:30pm from June 25th - October 8th and on Saturdays from 1:30pm-1:30pm from June 14th - October 18th. New Roots in SLC also offers a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and the Redwood Farm is a CSA pick-up location on Wednesdays.
