SNAP/EBT Membership

New Roots accepts SNAP/EBT for CSA payments!
(Not familiar with SNAP/EBT? Learn more!)

Traditionally, CSA members pay up front at the beginning of the season for their shares. As a SNAP/EBT member, you are still making a promise to purchase a portion of the farmers' harvest for the entire season, but you pay weekly for your share at the time of pick-up.

SNAP/EBT members end up paying half the price for a full or half share due to the Double Up Food Bucks program, which matches dollar-for-dollar any SNAP/EBT funds that are spent on fruits and vegetables, up to $30 per day!

Am I eligible?

In order to be eligible to participate as a SNAP/EBT customer, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You currently receive SNAP/EBT benefits and have an Utah Horizon card.

  • You are willing to make a $10, $20 or $35 refundable deposit, depending on the share size you sign up for, using cash or check. This money will be returned to you at the end of the season if you have good attendance (see ‘Absences & Missed Pick-Ups’ below).

  • You agree to pay for your share using debit/credit card or cash if SNAP/EBT funds aren’t available.

  • You can commit to purchasing a share for the full 16 week season, with some allowed absences (see 'Absences & Missed Pick-Ups').

  • You have an email address that you check at least once a week. This is important because New Roots sends out updates during the CSA season.

  • You have reliable transportation to the pick-up site, and the pick-up window works with your schedule. Members can only claim their shares between 4:30 and 7:00pm on Wednesday’s from Redwood Farm:

    • Redwood Farm: 3005 Lester St, West Valley City, UT 84119. Thursday’s 4:30-7pm

We strive to make the CSA as inclusive as possible – If you are eager to participate but you cannot afford a security deposit or you require other special accommodation, please reach out and we can discuss options! Contact Kati at kati.robison@rescue.org.

Absences & Missed Pick-ups

SNAP/EBT CSA members are allowed 2 planned absences and 2 unplanned absences before facing penalty. For planned absences, notify your pick-up site leader or other New Roots staff at least one week in advance. You can also plan to have someone else pay for and pick up your share for you if you will be out of town or otherwise unable to retrieve your share that day. If you forget to pick up your share, fail to claim your share during the designated pick-up window, or have an unplanned absence, we will donate your share to the food bank or to a family in need.

We will use your security deposit to cover the cost of your share for an unplanned absence. After two no-shows, we will stop harvesting and packing a share for you and your CSA membership will be suspended until further discussion.

How Do I Sign Up?

Customers interested in using SNAP/EBT funds to purchase a share can sign-up using the form below or through the set of instructions on the CSA Sign-Up page!
