New Roots Farmers Markets Review 2023

 

 

Summary

  • New Roots operated two farmers markets in 2023, both markets saw an increase in sales from the previous year.

  • 21 New Roots produce vendors attended New Roots markets over the 16-week season.

  • Small business owners from the community also joined the markets to sell things like hot foods, snacks, cold drinks, clothing, and personal items

  • YALL youth joined the markets and helped with distributing EBT/SNAP benefits booth, and food pantry, Joinedde kids activities and support at the New Roots farm.

  • 75% of market sales came from SNAP/EBT, or "food stamp", funds and a $30 Fresh Fund Incentive funded by the USDA known as Double Up Food Bucks.

  • All markets offered a $30 match incentive for customers shopping with EBT cards. At least 650 individuals utilized the Double Up match incentive this year.

  • Throughout the season 500 free kids’ lunches were provided to the children at the market

  • An estimated $68,000 worth of free food was distributed at the Sunnyvale food pantry

  • Items distributed at the pantry include flour, sugar, peanut butter, honey, cooking oil, and personal hygiene items
